In an interview with CNN, Martin Cooper, the man who invented the cell phone from Motorola in 1973, says he knew one day be ubiquitous devices. But today’s smart phones are more complicated than I ever imagined possible.

Speaking with CNN, Cooper said that “we knew that one day everyone would have a cell phone [], but it was hard to imagine that happening in my life.” But it happened in his life, and now there are nearly five million mobile phones on the planet.

As the cell phone industry has grown, however, the devices themselves have grown along with it, have added more and more functions and become more complicated as a result. And according to Cooper, they can often be too complicated:

I must tell you all that dreamers never imagined that all these things could be combined into one, and I really am not so sure it’s a great thing. Phones have become so complicated, so difficult to use that you wonder if this is designed for real people or engineers.

I think what is really going to happen is that we will have a lot of different types of phones that our industry to grow – some that are just simple phones. In fact, my wife and I started a company, and designed the Jitterbug, which is just a simple phone.

Of course, that does not mean that Cooper failed to keep up with the latest and greatest devices, had pioneered an iPhone, but gave to his grandson, and now uses a Motorola Droid. And in case you were wondering how you feel about it: “I think the Android phones are now reaching the most recent version of the Android phones are as good if not better than the iPhone.
