During the past year, the collective response of most manufacturers of mobile phones for iPhone and has not been silenced. However, now Samsung is trying another tactic. His new Samsung Instinct (SPH-M800) for Sprint is the first mobile phone we’ve seen that casts some direct competition from Apple. Still rejecting the idea of an "iPhone murderer" as ridiculous, but here the comparisons are inevitable and Sprint is doing nothing to silence them.

Although the instinct and see the iPhone on it, and who rely heavily on touch screens with unique interfaces, there are some important distinctions characteristics. The Instinct offers its own brand of visual voice mail and better than the first incarnation of the iPhone offer 3G (EV-DO Rev A) network compatibility, built-in GPS, and work by e-mail, to name only some. The new 3G iPhone will be more uniform equals, but even the instinct gets points for its multimedia messaging, voice dialing and video recording. In the important areas of usability and performance, however, the instinct struggled for a few fronts. The Web browser is not as easy as we expected, the camera lacks editing functions, and the instinct of the call and video quality were variable. However, even with those caveats, the instinct remains a powerful and innovative cell phone loaded with a set of features and attractive design. The instinct is $ 129 with mail-in rebate and a two-year period "Simply All" scheme. Simply All plans start at $ 70 per month.

Design
From all accounts, the instinct is striking but not unique design. The predominantly touchscreen device sports a thin candy-bar form that measures notebook 4.57 inches by 2.17 inches by 0.49 inches. That makes it a little taller and fatter than the iPhone, but also thinner when measured across its front face. Samsung fans also notice a resemblance to the Samsung SGH-F490, which is the GSM version of Instinct. At 4.4 ounces, the instinct is strong feeling in the hand and offers a solid construction. He also liked the simple color scheme of silver and black background.

The instinct of the touch screen dominates their property. With the support of 262000 colors and a resolution of 432,240 pixels, the screen is positively beautiful. Colors popped, were vibrant graphics, and text is crisp. In fact, is one of the best shows we’ve seen in a while. You are offered a good number of customization options; can not change the menu text messages or source, but you can adjust the brightness and the backlight time. It should be noted that when the screen is dark, it also locks automatically.

However, as rich as is the screen, we had a minor complaint. At 4.25 inches, is a quarter-inch smaller than the screen of the iPhone. This may not sound like a huge difference, but I can not see the screen when you’re overcrowding browsing the Web or watch videos. We assume that you get used to the long, and we recognize that is an improvement over the Samsung Glyde touchscreen smaller, but it is a point that he could not let go.

The instinct of simple menu interface is easy to use and attractive. At the bottom of the screen are icons for the four menus (favs, Main, Fun, and the Web). The four-page menu design is an interesting and effective agreement. The menu favs (aka favorites) is user-programmable so it can with a more preferred stock of its functions. The main menu is reserved for messaging, organizer, and GPS features, the menu has Fun games, multimedia options, and the camera and the menu shows a selection of Web browser shortcuts. All menus feature bright icons to represent the various features, but only fun and Web allows the menus of any customization. The secondary menus are also intuitive. For example, we had no problems determining how to start a new text message or moving items around a list.
The instinct of the touch screen offers touch haptic feedback. It is an interesting feature, because it lets you know for sure that you are choosing a menu option. You can turn the vibration off but can not change their duration or intensity. For the most part, the tactile interface is intuitive and easy to use, but we had a couple of observations. Despite some options in the configuration menu can be turned on and off a slider back and forth with his finger, other options require you to tap on each side of the bar. Undoubtedly, we prefer the first option. Scrolling through long lists or messages was a pleasure, however. Like the iPhone, we just have to swipe our finger up and down.

On the other hand, the instinct not suffer from the disadvantages of usability we have seen in the Glyde. We rarely had to play in the selection menu twice to record our choice. In addition, the screen recognized our selections when we played around their edges. You can adjust the screen calibration and tactile sensitivity.

Below the display are three small touch controls. There is a back button, a home key, and a vocation control. Unfortunately, these keys are a bit more complicated to use. Sometimes we had to click a check twice (the Back button in particular) for the registration of our choice. Also, vibration feedback here is barely perceptible. Pressing control Home normally takes you automatically to favs menu, while the selection of the call replaces the control menu icons at the bottom of the screen with shortcuts to speed dialer, his contacts menu, The list of recent calls, and Dialpad.

The latter opens a keypad with a large green button. The individual numbers are large, and we like that there is a dedicated Save key for the storage of new phone numbers. The key lies just below the bridge Dialpad, with a pause control and direct access to the visual voice-mail feature. Our only complaint is that the lyrics of the number keys are small; users with visual impairments should test this phone before buying.

After dialing his number, you have to press the green bar to make the call. That was a little counterintuitive to us – we wanted to press calling touch control below the screen – but once they knew what to do, is not a problem. When you’re on a call, a sub-menu appears on the screen with a few shortcuts by hand to turn off the sound, activate the speakerphone, access your contact list or the main menu, and placing three-way call. To end a call you have to slide the red bar on the right. This is a convenient arrangement, since it minimizes the likelihood that you’re going to hang someone accidentally.
We are glad to see that the instinct of default alphabet keyboard in landscape mode. As a result, we have been able to keep the phone in both hands and type away with our thumbs. Controls on the screen includes a button back, a space bar, dedicated period, comma, apostrophe keys, a control, and a dedicated button to access a second keyboard with numbers and symbols. In general, the keyboard is easy to use, but we had some complaints. The buttons individual must be big enough for most people, but users with large hands might find the agreement of overcrowding. Moreover, while we can magnify the text to see what you’ve written, you should do to minimize the keyboard, which is rather counterproductive. The Instinct does not correct spelling as the iPhone does.

Alternatively, you can enter text with a method of graffiti. You’ll have to change the orientation of the display of his portrait on the screen using the button – unlike the iPhone, the instinct not have an accelerometer. When used mode of graffiti, the instinct recognizes most of our records without any problem. Including the pencil is a great help to write in the small space allowed, but, unfortunately, the instinct does not include a storage slot for the stylus to when you’re traveling.

On the left side of the Instinct is a camera shutter control by voice activation, and the microSD card slot. A power or screen lock control and a headset jack 3.5 mm (nice!) Sitting at the top of the phone, charger and the port and the volume rocker rest on the left spine. The camera lens and self-portrait mirror sit on the back of Instinct, is a comfortable place to take pictures of all kinds.
The Instinct comes with a variety of accessories in the box. In addition to the necessary charger and headset, you will also find a USB cable, a CD software, and a carton. There’s even an extra battery with a special case. You can feed the same with the extra battery charger and keep it on hand when needed emergency power. That’s a nice touch.

Features
The instinct telephone directory has 600 contacts with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an email address, a URL, and notes. However, this is fairly small set of options for such high-end phone. Moreover, you can save calls to groups and can link with one photo and one of 27 polyphonic ring tones. This is a fair choice, and we like the design of the setup menu, which allowed us to a test or as many shades as we would like. The Instinct also offers a way to vibrate when you need to keep it quiet.

The Instinct steps to the plate in a great way to offer its own version of visual voice mail. Like the iPhone, each message is displayed on your screen as a list, along with the message identifying the sender, when received, and duration. Then you can listen to messages in any order you choose. The service works as intended.

Organizer features are plentiful and include text and multimedia messaging, a calendar, a notebook (you can use the keyboard or the method of graffiti), a calculator, a unit converter, a tip calculator, an alarm clock, a clock, a stopwatch and a world clock. Most of the organizer features are easy to use and we could not help but notice that the clock and timer to see exactly as they do in the iPhone. Moreover, the timing was a little overcrowded and that does not offer one week hearing. Moreover, the world clock is quite buggy. Rather than write in the name of the city, you have to select the exact location on the map, and then touch their desired city in the area of relief. This is an annoying and imprecise process, we continue to receive Buenos Aires when we try to play the map, near the city of New York. Also, you can display only four cities at the same time.

Other features include Bluetooth stereo with a profile phone as a modem supports audible caller ID, a speakerphone, mobile synchronization of contacts stored, and USB storage devices. The Instinct also offers an extensive voice command feature that can be used to dial phone numbers or phone contacts, address a text or multimedia message, and access information such as traffic, sports, weather or news. No speech-text support, but the voice command function is not an excellent integrated with Microsoft Live Search. Speaking on behalf of a company or even the type of activity (such as "pizza"), using the GPS phone connection to their search around the location of a party. Then you can get a map and directions for the business, sharing with a friend across a message or call the location with a touch. In our tests has worked quite well. When we tried to say "Maya", which not only has a restaurant located one block away, but also a physician in Palo Alto, Calif., named Maya. And when we tried to say "pizza", got a long list of options. This is one of the best features of Instinct.

Messaging options are plentiful and we were surprised to clean and intuitive e-mail integration. Text messaging and multimedia messaging options are mostly standard, but the instinct goes a step further with its text. Like the iPhone, which shows the complete sequence of a text so that the conversation does not have to sort through individual messages. Instant messaging was not present, however. That is an unfortunate omission in a phone of this caliber.

The Instinct does an excellent job with his duties as e-mail. There is a good smartphone, but is well ahead of most other phones on the market, including the first iPhone. You will find integrated support for POP3 accounts from AOL, AIM, Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail. We had only to enter our Yahoo account information and we are up and running in no time. You can keep open multiple accounts at once and instinct will let you know of new messages, showing a blue star icon in the main menu. E-mail synchronization is quite random. Sometimes, new messages that appear in our in-box automatically, while other times we had to press the Update button. Either way, is not a big deal. Note that the instinct email application that only a few ways. The instinct of the in-box can show a maximum of 100 messages, and you can not access individual folders within your in-box. The latter feature is particularly problematic. In addition, only messages sent from the phone display Instinct sent into the box.

At work, you can connect directly to your e-mail if your company supports Outlook Web Access. We have used this method, and again we have had our e-mail within minutes. OWA mail is subject to the same limitations as described above, but if you need to work e-mail on the fly, is an option that meets. Fortunately, any e-mails sent from the phone will reappear in his office. If your company has no OWA, you must use Sprint Mobile e-mail client. It is true that the experience is not as fluid as a true smartphone with Microsoft Exchange Server. You can read but not modify many attachments attachments including photos and text documents. What’s more, you can send messages with attachments stored on the phone. The Instinct strip out any HTML in emails, but can open Web pages, click on the links.

The Web browser Instinct excited us, but we came away with mixed impressions. In the mouth, this is a full HTML browser so it displays Web pages in almost all its splendor. It lacks support for Flash, but that is common in devices that likes this. Moreover, we liked that you can choose to see the light of mobile versions of the pages on its site. This is a great option for those times when you are away from a fast 3G connection. What’s more, the introduction of new URL through the onscreen keyboard is easy. However, late in the day, browser interface has been disappointing. The actual pages are crushed in a small area of an already small screen. That left us feeling quite crowded and we had to do a lot of displacement to see the whole pages. You can drag the page by moving the finger, but the screen slowly responded with charque movements. We had the same experience in LG Voyager, in other words, it’s like the iPhone, but not so elegant. As an alternative, Instinct offers a single Web-panning method for moving around a page. You just have to click the camera shutter (which will be at the top of the Instinct web browser default in landscape mode) and moving the phone up and down and from left to right. The corresponding website will move, which allows you to sweep across the page. It is a clear idea, but the concept is better than reality. Although the movement was fluid, we find it difficult to control speed. Too often, we zipped past something that is expected on earth. Besides, did not like how when you arrived on both sides of a page, panning automatically reversed direction. But wait, the instinct offers another way to scroll through a page. By clicking on the "Fit" to display the page in its entirety. You can then move a blue square around the switch to select the area of the page you want to see. It works quite well, except that you can not read any text on the website is in full screen. Wow.

Fortunately, we had some problems with selection of links on a Web page. There were occasions when we had to push twice a selection, but that it is not uncommon in touch screen phones. However, noted that the links have been selected not always highlighted when we played. This could be a problem if you’re a navigator or occupied that is full of people surfing a page. The Instinct includes a payload of direct access buttons on the browser window. Among other things you can find on the website, open your favorites list, return to your home, check your history, and zoom in on a page. The last option is a good idea but is not terribly effective, since only zoom to a degree. In fact, admit that we have been spoiled by the iPhone multitouch interface.

The instinct of the lack of Wi-Fi is a blow to this type of Internet phone easy. Of course, Sprint EV-DO connection to do the job most of the time, but there are times when 3G coverage is not available. Moreover, even if the instinct requires an unlimited Internet plan, it would be good to use your home network if you prefer to do so. This is customer choice.

In addition to the main browser, the instinct offers exclusive channels for weather, sports, news and movies. The weather options operates similarly to the iPhone, just punch in its list of cities and you can see the prognosis for each. But as a bonus you can also see a map of U.S. radar places. In the movie channel area can get show times in entering your zip code.

As mentioned earlier, the instinct fully supports GPS. You can use the feature to use Sprint spoken navigation for driving and visual step by step directions. You can also search neighboring businesses as you would with Live Search. Traffic information is available as well, among them a clear choice of 3D map. Using the touch screen to move across maps is easier than in the Web browser. The finger of movement is more fluid and response time is fast. Read our review Sprint Navigation for a complete description.

As EV-DO phone, the instinct offers full support for Sprint 3G services. You can connect to Sprint Power Vision from Sprint and television, including live and on-demand programming from a wide variety of channels such as CNN, E!, MTV Mobile, Discovery Mobile, ESPN, Logo Mobile, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. You can also leave before the movie previews to help you select a movie. In all this is an exhaustive selection of programming with much of what exclusive to Sprint. You can also flow from more than 150 channels of Sirius Radio and Sprint Radio. The touch screen interface for the media player is intuitive and responsive. At first it was disconcerting to use the phone back button to navigate through menus video. Since you’re using the phone in landscape mode, the Back button is down.

The instinct of music player (MP3, AAC, AAC +, WMA formats) is relatively similar to Sprint in other music phones. You can access the Sprint Music Store for simultaneous downloads both to your PC and wireless phone. The music player interface is nothing fancy. Though you get album art, the functions are limited to repeat and shuffle modes, and you can not use as ringtones MP3. The airplane mode turns off the phone by calling functions for listening to music while in flight. As we said earlier, the instinct uses a 3.5mm jack, so you’ll be able to use the headset included in the box. You can send the music player into the background while you’re using other phone functions. When a call comes, music will automatically pause and resume once more after you hang up. The Instinct also supports the Sprint Media Manager to synchronize the phone with your PC.
The Instinct has a 2.0-megapixel camera, but we were surprised by their lack of options. Unable to adjust the resolution, quality, brightness, or any other settings that you find in any basic camera phone. We are not sure what Samsung goes on here. Maybe we’re trying to do the instinct easy to use, but we are disappointed by the lack of options. Of course, these options do not always make a big difference in image quality, but it’s still good to have them. As we have said previously there is a self-portrait mirror, but the instinct not have a flash. However, as we did the photometer hand and the "blurred image" warning when you’re about to take a bad photograph. The image quality was decent but not spectacular. The objects are different and colors are natural but there was too light in most cases.
On the other hand, we liked the instinct of the photo-see feature. Like the iPhone, can move between photos of swiping your finger across the display. It is a fun experience and we like the movement of fluids. Alternatively, you can see pictures in a filmstrip mode. Shortcut options are also abundant. You can send your photos via Bluetooth, upload them to an online account, save them as a contact for photo identification, or zap a friend in a multimedia message. There is also a 2x digital zoom.

The camcorder lacks editing options, but that takes clips with sound in two lengths. Clips meant for multimedia messages are capped at 30 seconds, otherwise, you can shoot depending on available memory. Camcorder lips were very strong and we like the player that can support video files on your PC. Both photos and videos are stored directly to the microSD card for easy transfer to your phone. The Instinct cards can accommodate up to 8 GB, which is a good thing since internal storage lids in a miserable 32MB. More memory that a bonus.

You can customize the Instinct with screen savers and alert tones. Additional options are available from Sprint through wireless Web browser. Games and applications include demo versions of Bejeweled, Brain Challenge, Sudoku, Midnight Bowling, Million Dollar Poker Nascar Sprint Cup Scene It, and Pac-Man. You also get Sprint NFL Mobile application. The full versions of games besides tiles are available for purchase. For more fun instinct offers direct access to MSN Mobile and Photobucket.

Performance
We tested (CDMA 800/1900; EV-DO) dual banda CDMA Samsung Instinct in San Francisco using Sprint service. The call quality was fairly mixed, unfortunately. Though the volume level was okay, was not clear. Not only was the sound depends on us rather harsh, but could also be rather patchy at times. We would not say that our experience in ruins – far from it, in fact – but it’s enough for us to take into account. We recognize that this is one of the first Instincts available, so it may take some time to achieve a comprehensive Shakedown. We continue to test call quality in the coming days.

In his view, callers have no trouble hearing, but could say we were using a cell phone. They also reported uneven sound quality, said the phone picked up some background noise. Do not ruin your experience, either, but the instinct of call quality is not the best we have heard of a device for Sprint. Similarly, speaker calls out loud, but we are remarkably static. We had to talk about phone to be heard, but it is not uncommon. Automated calling systems can understand if we talk in a quiet area.

The signal reception for voice calls was slightly irregular, but GPS and EV-DO connection remained strong even when we were in a building. And, as is the case with most Sprint phones, we could get a strong signal underground.

As is the first device to support Sprint’s EV-DO Rev A birth certificate, were eager to see how zippy instincts that make web browser. However, during our initial tests will not notice much difference between Sprint other devices. In fact, occupied Web pages, such as CNET.com took a few seconds to load. Sprint assures us, however, that delays are related to improvements in the network and not the device itself. In a couple of occasions, the pages seemed wrong, but this was quite rare. Song downloads were fast, and took about 30 seconds to download a 3.7MB track. Games downloads are very fast in our tests that took only a few seconds for each title.

The phone’s internal menus worked well. We moved between different pages quickly with a delay of one second in only a few pages. In general, navigation is a pleasant experience, and that is an improvement over the Voyager. Playing with the touch screen involved a slight learning curve, but it is pleasant experience for most titles.

Multimedia performance was a mixture unfortunately. The music sounded very well for most. The only outlet he has decent, but the sound is distorted at the highest level. Video performance was not as good, however. The streaming videos occupy only a small part of the display of instinct and the quality is pixelated. In addition, the sound was a little off and the video could not support the fledgling movement. Live video was more or less the same, unfortunately.

Instinct The Samsung SPH-M800 has a rated battery life of 5.75 hours of talk time. In our tests we achieve a little more than six hours of talk time. Do not forget that a backup battery comes in the box, but must provide an additional 5.75 hours. According to FCC radiation tests, the instinct has a digital SAR rating of 1.46 watts per kilogram, which is at the top.
